Sweet potato is an amazing root crop (root tuber) for Belarus! Unlike potatoes, sweet potatoes are a perennial herbaceous vine - a relative of the familiar plant bindweed. It grows in humid tropical climates and can produce root crops weighing up to 10 kg. In temperate countries, sweet potato is grown as an annual plant, and its tubers reach 1–3 kg.



Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamins and nutrients. It is an excellent source of protein, carbohydrates, fibre, B vitamins, vitamin C, potassium and calcium. In addition, sweet potato is a unique source of vitamin A: 100 grams of the product contains up to 2 daily requirements for an adult.



Sweet potatoes taste sweet and vaguely resemble carrots or pumpkins, although most often their taste is compared to frozen potatoes.



How we dug sweet potatoes!
This year, the sweet potatoes were dug before the sharp cold, at the end of September. But in the tires it still bloomed at that time, so we left it until the frost arrived.



Based on the results of this year’s and last year’s harvest, we came to the conclusion that sweet potatoes planted in barrels and tires consistently have a good harvest. But in the beds and in the greenhouse, the sweet potato yielded a harvest of only one, even though the delicate leaf came out large.



This year they are very sweet, you really don’t have to wait for December. We baked it in the oven and were surprised at how sweet it was. I really liked it both raw and baked!
