Spring planting works are in full swing 21.04.2020 12:23:59

At the beginning of the creating the garden I wanted to try out the idea of mixed plantings, so I planted the maximum amount of everything on one garden bed. Over time, it appeared to be not very convenient to maintain, especially if the plants were perennial. As the garden beds settle it is necessary to add soil or humus from time to time. And there are plants that grow in in islands or individually that make that process difficult, like for example parsley, celery, onion, wormwood, sorrel, asparagus, lafanthus, peppermint, or overwinter spinach and early growing self-sowing lettuce.

This season I decided to try out a new idea, to leave annual plants on the garden beds (to minimize mixed planting up to 2-3 plants on one bed for easier maintenance), but also to grow flowering and aromatic herbs, as many as possible, on the pathways between the beds that we have covered by sand and gravel over geotextile. They might really help against pests, or at least they will attract useful insects.

Last year we had self-seeding marigolds, lettuce, cilantro, kale, garden purslane and even some peas growing on pathways. Strawberry spread its tendril onto the paths in the fall. This year we also had a lot of celery and peppermint. Leek and other weeds also still grow on the paths, but I think that is a matter of time till they’re gone.

For perennials we made a new tier garden bed / flower bed. We transplanted sorrel, perennial onions of three kinds, parsley and celery there. Transplanting parsley, we came across some rooted ones, and we left them for food.

Favorite thing for daughter to do outdoors now is to make small bouquet of flowers. So we get a new one every day.

The daffodils that bloomed first are already fading, but new ones have blossomed, and there are those who are just going to bloom, which surprises and pleases at the same time.

We already have plants that came up in the garden, like onion sevoc, planted on March 15th, and radishes, spinach, and salad sown on March 13th. Spinach overwintered perfectly, partly in the greenhouse and partly outside. Also perennial onions and sorrel came up, as well as parsley and celery. Asparagus is about to come up.

So, we have no worries about quarantine announced in Krasnodar since March 31. We will definitely have something to eat.

Pheasants constantly show up in our garden. Some potatoes and onions were turned out of the soil. It might be either their handiwork, or it’s our kitty who “helps”.

At the end of March we finally installed drip watering on the ground beds and in the greenhouse.

Unlike outside, in the greenhouse we have peas coming up that we planted as an experiment on March 12. In the greenhouse I planted seedlings of tomatoes 10 pcs, peppers 20 pcs, and cucumbers 5 pcs. This year I planted it almost two weeks earlier than last year, let's see what happens.

Our seedlings are still very small and require picking.

On March 27 we tested our bathhouse for the first time. To have your own bathhouse is, of course, just wonderful. The loungers turned out to be spacious, the steam generator works well. The steam room is comfortable. Pouring cold water down on you from a hanging bucket is very convenient.

Now we are focused on decorating the recreation room - the guest room. The walls and ceiling were prepared for painting and painted. We also painted the walls and the ceiling in the hallway.
