Vladimir Megre's book "The Ringing Cedars of Russia" was probably read by many, but the resident of Mari El Vasily Semyonov not only read, but also fired up with the desire to breed these most valuable trees of Russia himself.

Vasily Ivanovich is a man of action. Recently, "Mariyskaya Pravda" has already talked about this craftsman, who weaves hedges and makes wonderful panels from discarded plastic bottles.

Getting a cone
First of all, Semenov went to Yoshkar-Ola and bought a huge cedar cone on the market, which cost 50 rubles a few years ago. At home he husked nuts from it - about 100 pieces turned out and sowed them in his native village of Stary Yuledur. Of course, not all of them got up, there was a loss because the weather and even moles. On average, according to the experience of the enthusiast, about 80% of the seeds germinate.

Trees – slow runners
A couple of years ago, Vasily Ivanovich decided to repeat the experiment, again went for a pine cone, although now it cost exactly twice as much. He husked seeds-nuts and sowed them in pots in ordinary soil - a mixture of garden and turf soil. So young cedars are in pots and live in the garden all year round - 72 evergreen babies with long soft needles. They do not require special care, only water, if drought, occasionally weeding. They grow slowly, even in the third year of life the height of the seedlings is only 15-20 centimeters.

Gift to the home village
The indefatigable Semyonov wants to donate some of them for planting in the central park of the village, which is now undergoing reconstruction. There are already several blue spruces there, and the cedars will be very decent neighbors for them.
