Windshield plantings in the Raduzhniy les KD 20.04.2021 13:53:33

For two years now, we have been planting a windshield around our site. We designed it as a four-row one. Two rows of trees and two rows of shrubs. In general, this is considered the minimum for a good working wind protection.

Since we still have an earthen rampart (from the soil formed when digging a pond) along the entire border, we decided to plant a fence on both sides of the rampart. So then we have an internal perimeter and an external one.

In general, any specialist will tell you that wind protection should consist of the same plants of the same age for maximum efficiency. But we couldn't afford it - it's incredibly boring! Because we are growing the "Rainbow Forest".

Therefore, in the hedge we have a huge number of very different plants. Although there is still some basis - these are Lindens, Red oaks, Liquidambara, Kelreiteria, Bird cherry, Maples, Acacia, Black walnut, and Metasequoia, Gingko, Hawthorn, Beeches, Mulberry, Aylant, Pines, Fir trees, Platans, Elms, Catalpa dilute them and .... everything can no longer be remembered.

Among the bushes - Tatar honeysuckle, Amorph, Rosehip, Cornelian, Derain, Irga, Kalina, Vitex, Deytsia, Sumakh, Chubushnik, Zantaxilum, Persimmon, Bereskleti, Apple trees, Hibiscus, Pyrocantha and much more.

99% of the plants grown by me from seeds or cuttings. Finally, they bided their time and moved from the nursery to a permanent place of residence. In total, about 700 seedlings were planted in the hedge in two fall. Acacia trees grow the fastest, they are already taller than me. Lindens, oaks and other comrades while sitting, take root, they need time. This year we add a little sand and humus to the planting pits, in the past - only sand. Be sure to mulch with straw. The survival rate is 98%, mice and hares spoiled the picture a little. Over the past dry summer, we only watered the hedge 2 times, thanks to the thick layer of mulch.

Many trees are still very small, 40-50 cm in sprout, but the time will come when they will stand up to protect the "Rainbow Forest" from adverse weather conditions, will give us the beauty and comfort of our space.

Valeria Vorontsova: And the ditches on both sides, what are they for?

Tatyana Rytikova: There are several reasons.
1. Previously, we had water on the site, so the ditch plays the role of drainage.
2. Wind protection trees are planted along all the ditches, and since moisture remains in it for a long time and fertility will gradually accumulate, this is a feeding ditch for trees
3. The ditches have a drain of excess water into the pond, and the outer ditch is connected to a common roadside drainage network of ditches, it is due to this that our large pond is recruited to the brim in winter, during the rainy season. This is necessary, as it dries out a lot in summer. We have no groundwater. And the pond is powered exclusively by the rain.

Nadezhda Osadchiy: I suppose, It would be great to plant spruce along the crest of the rampart.

Tatiana Rytikova: It is unlikely that something will grow on the ridge, it is too dry there. Well, perhaps some of the most drought-resistant plants. In general, we will have a walking path along the ridge. When the windbreak trees grow, you get a nice shady alley.
