In our case, mowing the grass is a practical necessity. Without mowing, the grass on the plot grows taller than a person—and that’s no joke! And if it happens to rain, walking through such a plot becomes almost impossible. Wet grass guarantees that you’ll be soaked through.

Insects
Tall grass is the perfect shelter for insects such as mosquitoes and ticks. So, if you don’t mow, be prepared for the company of these little bloodsuckers.

Weeds
Overgrown grass is often accompanied by nettles and burdock. And if you want to walk around the plot, you’ll definitely need to wear thick clothing so as not to fall victim to them. An overgrown plot also creates the impression of abandonment, as if no one has lived here for a long time.

How do we deal with tall grass?
To keep the plot in order, we use several methods of mowing the grass.

Lawnmower
If the plot is flat, many people use a lawnmower. In addition to being easy to use, its advantage is that it can not only cut the grass but also collect it in a special bag. The mown grass can be used as mulch, which is beneficial for the soil.



Trimmer
Most households have a petrol or electric trimmer. This is a versatile tool that also allows you to remove young tree and shrub growth that a lawnmower can’t handle.



Scythe
There are also those who use a traditional hand scythe. This method requires skill and time to get used to, but it still has its place—especially for those who prefer environmentally friendly methods.

And what is said in the books?
The books do indeed speak about the benefits of plants that grow near a person’s home. But they also recommend creating a separate meadow for mixed grasses, rather than letting grass grow over the entire plot.

In our settlement, we have come to the decision that it’s best for us to mow the grass as much as possible—especially the roads that surround each homestead on all four sides. This helps us significantly reduce the number of mosquitoes in summer. We’ve shared how we deal with tall grass in our settlement.
